I’m Holding My Debut Solo Photo Exhibition “Facade: The Back Alley Collective”

I am very thrilled to announce that I’ll be holding my debut solo photo exhibition from the 7th of August to the 5th of November 2015. Facade: The Back Alley Collective is a series of 13 photographs that aims to unwrap the all-is-well but superficial facade of contemporary Singapore, presenting a multi-layered examination that complicates the world’s perception of the city-state. As the images explore local issues within a local context, I can’t think of a better place to exhibit than a hostel, where global audiences intersect, exchange stories, and explore our city-state. It will be held at Atelier@5footway.inn Project Bugis (10 Aliwal Street 199903, Nearest MRTs are Nicoll Highway & Bugis), and it’ll be open 24/7 for viewing. ARTIST’S STATEMENT In a global city where most things lack singularity, the back alleys of Singapore are distinct. Often overlooked, these neighborhood microcosms each possess unique personalities and features; the iconic green bins, the worn-down exteriors, and the people who use the alleys for a myriad of reasons. This hidden world alternates  between the dense, chaotic activity of …

8 Primary School Memories You Forgot Part 1: Twilight, Tamagotchis, MapleStory & More

Nowadays, most of the school children I encounter are talking about the latest app, the latest game, and the latest tips and cheats to level up their characters. Maybe it’s because of the generation I came from, but it’s kinda sad to see kids spending so much time tapping on gadgets that are bigger than their faces instead of creating adventures and exploring their imaginations with physical toys like Lego, train sets, and pull-back cars (yes kids, they actually exist). I’m not a fan of virtual contact, because it just doesn’t connect with me you know? How can you expect to create the same kind of fun and experience derived from something that’s 3D, something that has texture, color, character, and personality, on a device where all the fun and action happens on a shiny, state-of-the-art 10″ screen that is flatter than an ironing board. In this 3-part series (or maybe more), I aim to recall the things that were really ‘over’ and dominated my wonderful primary school days (2004-2009), recall my stories and experiences with them, encourage the next …

Memories

Remember the graduation video I was telling ya’ll about in the previous post? Yeap finally got everything exported proper and uploaded. It has always been my dream since Secondary 1 to have my work presented to my school mates. On the last official day of Secondary School, this wish of mine finally came true and I got to show the graduation video to about a strength of 900. It’s pretty darn special because film-making has been my passion for a really long time and it’s so surreal that my first short film (that’s not created for academic purposes) was received by such a big audience. I was kinda feeling a li’ll scared because the color projected on the screen in the hall was way different that what we’re seeing on our computers, so the intended feel and tone of the video was gone. The color contrasts and combinations were not as prominent anymore, making the video lose quite a fair bit of its aesthetic appeal. But as the video went out many people started laughing …

Friendships and Graduation

FRIENDSHIPS So after 4 years worth of memories it’s finally time to insert the period. It has been an exhilarating and scintillating ride of self-discovery, continuous learning and maturing throughout this third of a dozen years. But after all the “negative b plus or minus the square root of b square minus 4 ac over 2a”s, I realised something, that friends are so much more important than finding the roots of a stupid parabola, which doesn’t even exist sometimes. The friendships forged and bonded among our school community is something that I’ll treasure and never be able to forget. In these four years, people come and go, The people who you talk to everyday, share your worries, your sorrows, your happy experiences, they’ll just suddenly camouflage into the color of the air. However, there will also always be the people who will stick by your bloody side no matter how big of a grave you’ve dug or how deep of a shit you’re in. They’ll somehow be able to tell when something isn’t right in your …
